The Situation
Athieno Homes provides shelter and support to homeless children in Uganda, offering hope and a brighter future.
Total Fertility Rate
Uganda has a population of over 50 million people. Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is 2.1 and represents the replacement-level fertility, the average number of children per women needed each generation to exactly replace itself without needing international immigration.
Well, Uganda's is 4.2, that's double what's needed. Those numbers will explode a population, or in this case the younger side of it. It's easy to do the math and see that there are a lot of children.
Extreme Poverty
Because of the levels of poverty in Uganda...birthing a child and leaving it on the side of the road to die is a common practice. While inhumane, this is the stark reality.
For the homeless children...many of these children's parents have died. Some died trying to take care of them. Some parents run off because they can't provide for them. And some children run away because of their harsh home life that includes poverty and abuse.
Ages 0-14 make up about 50% of the 50 million population. Less than 2.4% of the population is over 65 years of age. Many of these children's parents have died. With a population with a median age of 16.7 years old, that means more than half of the population is minors. It's not hard to fathom that there are not enough adults to care for them.
It's an issue the Ugandan government is not handling.
